Why Join County Committee?
County Committee is a low-lift, high-impact way to be involved in the Democratic Party, represent your neighborhood and make change happen at the local level.
What is County Committee?
-
The grassroots, governing board of the New York County Democratic Party, aka Manhattan Democrats
-
It approves the leadership and rules of Manhattan Democrats at a meeting that occurs once every two years.
-
Every election district (ED) in Manhattan has between two and four representatives.
-
A County Committee person is elected to a two-year term.
-
We also encourage you to join Downtown Independent Democrats and help organize your local neighborhood.
What is Expected
-
Attend annual County Committee meeting each fall.
- Attend any meeting to fill elected official vacancies.
Why It’s Important – County Committee Chooses the Democratic Nominee in Special Elections when an Incumbent Dies or Resigns
-
1 in 3 current New York state legislators was chosen in a special election!
- Local Examples: In 1992, after Rep. Ted Weiss died, County Committee chose Jerrold Nadler to be the Democratic nominee. In 2017, after State Sen. Daniel Squadron resigned, County Committee nominated State Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh. Both nominees went on to win the general election and have served their districts ever since.
How to Join
- Must be a registered Democrat.
- Appointed by your local Democratic Club (or petition with your local Democratic Club during primary season.)
