Ratify the New York Equal Rights Amendment

On June 26, 2024, DID membership approved a resolution to support and work to ratify the New York Equal Rights Amendment. As authorized by the resolution, DID also signed on to a letter to the Chair of the NY State Democratic Party calling on the NYS Democratic State Committee to devote efforts to ensure that the NY ERA is ratified in November.

On November 5, 2024, New Yorkers will vote on whether to amend the New York State Constitution to pass the New York Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

The state constitution currently only explicitly protects against discrimination based on race or religion. The New York ERA would vastly broaden the scope of those protections to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on a person’s ethnicity, national origin, age, disability and sex, including their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes.

The New York ERA would also functionally protect against any government actions that would impair a person’s reproductive autonomy or access to reproductive health care.

With the passage of this resolution DID is committed to:

  • ratifying the New York ERA
  • supporting organizing efforts to increase voter awareness that the amendment is on the reverse side of the ballot
  • sign on as a Democratic political club to and make people aware of the NY ERA letter to the Chair of the NY State Democratic Party.
