On December 12, 2024, DID membership approved a resolution advocating for the retention of a Medicare option for NY City retirees.
With the passage of this resolution, DID is committed to:
- Urging all elected officials to publicly support Int 1096-2024, introduced by Councilmember Christopher Marte and supported by the NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees, which protects retired employees' vested health insurance coverage;
- Demanding the city maintain the original Medicare plan provided at the time of hiring, rejecting privatized, profit-driven alternatives;
- Calling on city officials to uphold New York Administrative Code Section 12-126, honoring contractual and statutory obligations to cover retirees' out-of-pocket expenses;
- Imploring the City Council to demonstrate leadership by approving legislation protecting retirees from forced, costly, healthcare plan modifications.
