Update on Beth Israel Hospital Closure
Last week, the New York State Department of Health rejected Mount Sinai Beth Israel's closure plan as "incomplete."
In a letter addressed to Beth Israel, DOH instructed hospital executives to provide evidence of their claims that the hospital has to close because of financial losses and declining patient visits. DOH further directed Beth Israel to come up with a plan to ensure the community's access to emergency services.
Although the DOH's decision is not a final rejection of the hospital's closure plan, it marks a significant victory for the community's campaign to hold the hospital accountable for its conduct.
Every elected official representing Lower Manhattan, including Congressmembers Dan Goldman and Jerry Nadler, state Senators Kristen Gonzalez and Brian Kavanagh, Assemblymembers Harvey Epstein, Deborah Glick and Tony Simone, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and City Councilmembers Carlina Rivera, Christopher Marte, Keith Powers and Erik Bottcher, put out a joint statement calling the decision "a major win for our community, which has for months been raising the alarm about the negative effects this planned closure would have on access to healthcare in Lower Manhattan."
