The plight of millions of New Yorkers facing economic devastation will not magically change on January 20th. Our economy won’t recover until all people have what they need to thrive--not just the rich. The top 1% of New Yorkers have the lowest proportional tax burden of any income bracket. Greater NYC for Change (@GNYCforChange) demands that Governor Cuomo put an end to tax breaks for the wealthy and start investing in our New York.
Join us on Martin Luther King Day (January 18, 2021) for a teach-in about this policy movement.
In his work, All Labor Has Dignity, Dr. King laid out a lesson we've learned the hard way, thanks to COVID-19: Working-class people are as essential to our nation as white-collar professionals. Dr. King also warned that the gaping maw of economic inequality, still expanding every day now by unprecedented levels of wealth and exploitative policies, would hold our country back.
We are organizing for change in 2021, starting with Invest in New York, to:
- raise $50 billion in new revenue by ending tax breaks for the wealthiest New Yorkers
- prevent cuts to public programs and invest in high-quality education, jobs, housing, and healthcare
- ensure state revenue benefits the most vulnerable communities, including essential workers, workers excluded from federal unemployment, and low-income New Yorkers
Observe the memory of Dr. King with us as we heed his call for political action toward #EconomicJustice. Greater NYC for Change has combined forces with Downtown Independent Democrats and other community-based groups across the city, such as Hells Kitchen Democrats, United Thru Action, Chelsea Reform Democratic Club, and VOCAL-NY to bring you a presentation developed by the #BudgetJustice champions at Empire State Indivisible.
