Democratic Club Rally to Support Hunger Strikers - No More 24!

In New York City, home attendants – predominantly immigrant women of color – are forced to work sleepless 24-hour shifts, for multiple days in a row. They care for our elderly, disabled, or severely ill loved ones who need 24-hour care. 24-hour home care work should be split into 8- or 12-hour shifts. 24-hour workdays destroy workers’ bodies and families, and endanger patients’ lives.

Wednesday, March 20th - Hunger Strike Begins with Noon Rally

Home health care workers have been struggling to end their inhumane working conditions for years and are now planning a hunger strike in protest of the 24-hour workday. The hunger strike will begin with a rally at City hall Wednesday, March 20th. Please come. They need our support!

Council Member Christopher Marte has been in the forefront in trying to end this inhumane practice and has reintroduced his No More 24 act to the Council (Intro 615). But, so far, Speaker Adrienne Adams has refused to bring the bill to a vote. We need to be there for these workers as they continue to put their health on the line, even more so now with this hunger strike to get Speaker Adams to bring the bill to a vote.

Saturday, March 23 - Democratic Club Support Day - Noon Rally!

A growing coalition is organizing to support women during the hunger strike, and Saturday, March 23rd, at noon, is designated Democratic Club Support Day. Please join everyone at City Hall. Bring your club banner!

For safety reasons, the strikers need to have support people with them at all times. Here is a sign up sheet for shifts to provide that support.
The shifts are not hard and fast — the coalition simply wants to make sure there is always someone with the hunger strikers and this will help organizers make sure the gaps are filled.
